Heard a great message on Sunday, refreshing and yet so simple.

Ephesians 3:20, which reads

"Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us"

3 key points

Ask - Sometimes we just don't think about asking God. But the verse writes that God is able to exceed what we ask... But how if we haven't even asked?

Think - We might have "default mode" thoughts. Some might say "ungodly beliefs". Whatever it is, what we think is important, and it is important to have godly thoughts. And not to be bounded by our stereotypes or half-baked theories and all that might just constrain us from believing that God is indeed able. Mighty able!

Power - The power that works in us is as mentioned in verse 17, it's love... Having experienced the immensity of God's love, we have the boldness in us and we have the power.

Reading: Genesis 29-30

Jacob had 2 wives - Leah, whom he was tricked into marrying, and Rachel, whom he loved. They both bore him sons, either them or their proxy, ie their maidservant. And that's we get the 12 tribes of Israel, which are Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Napthali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph (perhaps the most famous one of all), and Benjamin.

It kind of reminded me of those chinese shows I watched, set in ancient times. You know in the Imperial Palace when the concubines would vie with one another for the favour of the Emperor. Of course Jacob was no king, but his wives still vied for his favour. I just couldn't help but wonder, with that kind of environment growing up, how were the 12 brothers going to live harmoniously together? It'll be like, "dad loves MY mum more", and so on and so forth.

Anyway, chapter 30,

37 Jacob, however, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond and plane trees and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches. 38 Then he placed the peeled branches in all the watering troughs, so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat and came to drink, 39 they mated in front of the branches.

Quite the biologist Jacob was! And what follows is more interesting, verse 39 continues.

And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted. 40 Jacob set apart the young of the flock by themselves, but made the rest face the streaked and dark-colored animals that belonged to Laban. Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban's animals....

43 In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and maidservants and menservants, and camels and donkeys.

So Jacob now had flocks of his own, any ewe that was speckled, streaked or dark-colored was rightfully his, per agreement with Laban. Wow, such a smart breeder! Thing is, I recall my basic biology, Medellian genetics, and it's quite fascinating...

Usually speckled, spotted, dark coloured traits tend to be recessive. Meaning for it to be expressed physically, it requires both parents to have it. So if you took a speckled sheep, and mated it with another speckled sheep, the result is a speckled ewe. No doubt about that. And that's why I said Jacob was quite the biologist. And he prospered with many sheep...

Reading: Matthew 9

1Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town. 2Some men brought to him a paralytic, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven."
I remember hearing a recording of a sermon by a local methodist pastor (not from my church). I'm not sure if she preached on a different gospel, but reading these verses made me recall her sermon, or at least bits of it. What she highlighted was this paralytic had friends to care for his well-being, that would care for his health, his life, care for him enough to carry him to Jesus. She preached on the passage where they actually lowered him from the roof. This passage, this man was "lying on a mat", he didn't do any of the walking - of course he couldn't. But that's the point, he needed to be helped. Somehow he sought helped, or his friends just came to help. But he received their help, he didn't stop them from helping, gosh he was lying on the mat, not kicking and screaming. I'm picturing a man placidly lying on the mat, perhaps slightly embarrassed, but still allowing his friends to see him in such a state, and help him.

And the result? He was healed. Apparently, his physical infirmity had something to do with the consequence of his sins.

And note, it didn't write "when Jesus saw his faith (the paralytic)", Matthew wrote "when Jesus saw their faith". Somehow or other, I think the paralytic's friends played a part in his healing. It wasn't just the faith of that one man, but his friends too. I just finished reading "90 minutes in heaven", and Don Piper (the author) shared how he learnt how to let people help him. Being a pastor, he had no qualms about ministering to others, but struggled to allow others to help him.

I think it's something I can definitely improve on, letting others help me. It takes humility to allow others to help, something contrary to our "self-help" society. Maybe we need to debunk the myth that by allowing yourself to be helped, you're lousier, weaker, worst-off that the helper. Perhaps so, but not necessarily, or even to look at it that way. I think for us Christians, we know we can receive help because indeed we are weak, indeed we have nothing to boast of but Christ. And like how so many have shared, if we fail to allow people to help us, we're actually robbing them of their ministry to us. We're robbing them of exercising their gifts (spiritual gifts or natural talents God has given them).

I guess sometimes we think we don't want to bother others. But is that really the reason? Or is it our pride that we turn away people who have genuine hearts to help?

This has been a lesson to me recently. And I do admit, the next time help comes along, I'll be sure to consider the help seriously.

OT, Gen 18-19
NT, Matt 6:1-8

What was the appearance of the three men that made Abraham treat them with such reverence? "... bowed low to the ground" (18:2) Or was it something that stirred within Abraham that these men were special. I also wonder, was it a normal thing to sit at the entrance of one's tent in that day? I guess so, since there was no air-condition to cool the whole place, the tent must have warmed up quite fast.

Three men. What a special number I thought. And three seahs of flour, meaning on seah of flour worth of bread for each person. 1 seah is equivalent to 7.33l.

Gosh so sleepy, not sure if I can read anymore. That's all for the mean time!

wordpress

no haven't shifted, still in the midst of deciding whether to shift.

you could check out my potential new blog here. best part is i didn't lose a single post in the move (unless you count this one lah).

obviously it's going to be a new interface to work with, but i could always just try it out i suppose. and if i don't like it/ can't get use to it, can always move back to good 'ol blogger.

went back to ij yesterday with tan. it's been 5 years since we graduated. still the same warmth it exudes. maybe it's attributable to the teachers', still the same familiar faces. kudos to them for still being in teaching, especially those who labour so tirelessly for their students.

as i take a fleeting glance at those bitter sweet memories of ij, can't help but feel a little warm inside. don't think of going back though, that time has passed. and time continues to march on, and i do wonder with some excitement what the futures lies for this soul.

i quote one of my favourite writers on presence in his book 'out of solitude':

"When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares."

- Henri Nouwen

heard dr tan soo-inn of grace@work fame yesterday. must admit his articles/ commentaries are pretty insightful and interesting. you don't usually hear me praising writers, except those like nouwen - think it's because dead men can't swell up with men's praise. but anyway, at one part he spoke about him going through a valley when his first wife had cancer, and subsequently passed away. that he had a friend who, like the quote above, just spent time and presence with him each week. how he looked forward to the company of that friend, when no amount of words would suffice, presence did.

i can't encapsulate the sheer importance of presence to humanity as well as nouwen did. that's why i can only humbly quote him here.

and the uni students are all awake

seriously, i look at my m+s-n list and virtually all uni folks.

it's 2.13am.

can't wait for recess week to come! i can truly attempt to sleep before 1am. you know, despite being a self-proclaimed night owl, i actually did 'enjoy' waking up early for ymlc. i suppose with the morning in my hands, could use it to exercise and do stuff.

this post seems to require so much effort. and i really need to find my muse, need it to write an essay!

tennis

oh my gosh i can't believe justine henin's leading the rankings by more than a 1000 points. the no. 2 is basically a mile away from here. mark of a definite champion, woo my fave tennis player. if she continues on form, she'll be... sublime.

i know i make lots of noise, or rather can generate quite a bit of noise when watching tennis on the telly. hey that's because people have the impression that you should watch tennis quietly. eh think what, only watch football can make noise ah? now you know, if you want noisy az, put henin in front of me playing live (note: must only be live, not live match no kick).

didn't take many pictures during ymlc, so here are the few i snapped. lest you're wondering why the middle picture has so little people, it's because this was the post-worship bit on the 2nd night (ended quite late with each participant being individually prayed for).

you know what they say about eating too much, makes one feel sleepy. seriously i feel it now, no good... and that's the only reason why i'm blogging. let me try to type faster hopefully this will wake me up. i can't try to jump around since i'm so full, so i can only resort to exercising my fingers - which isn't much exercise, dang.

got a test tomorrow. bloody chem test. another chem test coming tues. and a few thousand word essay to hand in on wed. not to mention got to complete a lab report with a full report - don't even know what that means but a heckload of writing and cracking of my very unchemfied brain.

i must have overate, feeling awfully satiated. must be all the making up for the buffet spread that i couldn't enjoy fully at batam. must admit i'm still reeling in from ymlc. it was really a wonderful time spent away amidst all the crazy busy going-ons of school. not to mention it was more than a holiday, was vital time spent with God and encountering Him.

seriously this must be the effects of the rice expanding. i do wonder if alcohol will cause it to shrink or help to assimilate some of it faster. at least alcohol will get rid of the oil and fat in my tummy i think, that should free up some space. okay talking rubbish now, seriously need to feel awake and refreshed so i can mug! and by the way a lychee martini, and all other martinis alcohol base is vodka, not martini. i don't know why the cocktail name is so misleading when only a few drops of vermouth (martini) is added.

back to reality, oops there goes gravity...

so i promised i'll write about ymlc. to be honest i went with an expectant heart, i really just wanted to encounter God. i think if you ask me about retreats, i can think of a million thing as my expectations. but i think one thing i learnt from the cs retreat was that He'll encounter me the way He wants to. sure i admit i was really alright with getting slain, hey that's quite an experience of firepower alright! and even more towards what i call firepowerish stuff. i didn't mind getting an emotional high, taking on such a ride as long as God takes me on it (here's coming from the more likely skeptic than enthu az). i had 2 things in the back of my mind at the beginning, they were perhaps the 2 things i desired to know, but above all i desired most to encounter Him. i shared the first with my mentor group, it's about purpose and ambition, and to be honest i truly believe He's guiding me in that even right now. as for the 2nd one, wow wow that got answered, definitely a highlight of ymlc.

i realised that God seems to speak to me not at the usual things. like when everybody got prayed for the anointing of the Spirit, when the pastors and mentors would come up to you and just pray for you. well... more people had their ymlc 'breakthroughs' and highlights then. and that was only 'okay, alright' to me. i definitely felt the Spirit's presence, heart beat faster, but that was about it.

there are some things when i, a natural cynic and skeptic just have to believe that this is something more than psychological. that these experiences transcends into something Spiritual. and i, am just in awe of God. that's why they say faith needs to be exercise. God usually gives you enough room to doubt... or to believe. He, being the gentleman that He is values (i cannot emphasise this enough) our free will. He allows US to make the choice, to choose Him, or not.

looking back, although i felt my group was a bit quiet. and that my stomach really wasn't feeling too well on the first 2 days. it was a great 3 days spent away, enriching, fulfilling. i crashed another mentor group for dinner, and i met someone in the same zone as me! new asgl for 'the ark'. and coincidentally my unit mate (2 rooms in a room) was also in that group.

back to the real world now though. i pray that all that new-found knowledge and increased conviction won't leave. instead to be convinced each day of your unlimited power in this life, and in the lives around me.

found love beyond all reason
You gave Your life Your all for me

and called me Yours forever

caught in the mercy fallout

i found hope found life
found all i need
you're all i need

the time has come

to stand for what we believe in

so i for one am
gonna
give my praise to You

today, today it's all or nothing

all the way
the praise goes out to You... - the time has come (this song has really been replaying in my head)

but i probably shouldn't end with a hillsong song. should be proud of the wonderful songs entered to the songwriting competition.

by Your unlimited power
unlimited grace
unlimited hope for us in this place
with the unlimited truth
Your promise remains
unlimited love that we can't contain
by Your unlimited power - theme song for ymlc

the song that came in 2nd place really touched me even before the conference. and the songwriter's from wesley! hoorah! what struck was his verse of 'the world cannot touch me when i'm down on my knees', and 'running with the victory'. diametrically opposite in imagery, but how true, how true! prayer is the strongest sword we have, yet so often overlooked. we talk about fighting it's with guns and brute force, who thinks of going down on your knees? in fact the latter would even seem weak or resigned, but no that's where all strength comes from.

(nearly lost this post, yes this long long post, but it's still here, saved as drafts. and that usually doesn't really happen with blogger when my window just closes)

i just reread my post on ymlc and realised it really didn't do the conference and God justice. i'll write more, just wait. it's something i'll definitely remember a week, month from now. and i'm not shy to say this because God is real.

all glory, honour and praise be to God!

ymlc

i don't think i'll go into details of it. but i must say i brought my swimming costume for nothing, as expected. the only time one can swim is before the first session starts at 8.30am. but breakfast starts at 7, not to mention the swimming pool is in front of the cafe where breakfast is served. but anyway the real reason is that free time was too precious, the thought of swimming just didn't really come in. i suppose a swim is only enticing when the weather is swelteringly hot, but you see, i didn't even know if it was since i was in the air-conditioned ballroom morning and afternoon.

worship was very youth-ish. not surprising since majority of the participants were youths or involved in youth ministry. i'm just an oddball since i wasn't in youth ministry, so felt my group was alright only. but you know the funny bit was at the last sharing i was really in awe and so grateful to God that each one of us encounter Him in His own way He wanted to encounter us. so filled with gratitude and joy that i actually teared. one think i did was tear a lot, coming from someone who abhors shedding any tear in public, it's truly amazing.

it was definitely a great conference. i might go back again next year if given the opportunity to, or maybe i'll attend it in 2 or 3 years time.

do want to write more, but got to run. soci quiz tomorrow! 'welcome back to the real world', i was telling yl. but even back in the world, with God in us i don't think we'll ever want to be the same again, and not let this world ensnare us. AMEN to that!

i shouldn't be up so late, i should be up so late...

i should be up so late on a normal wednesday night, or actually i shouldn't but it's acceptable since i've no school on thursday. well, it's a normal wednesday night, just that thursday isn't the usual. got lab at 9.30am, and i really shouldn't be bleary-eyed tomorrow in desperate need of a nap. you see, there's small group at night, and i reckon i'll only be done with that at 10. so the earliest i can get to bed is 10.30, which means i won't compensate for the lack of sleep tonight! got to be at harbourfront at a grossly early hour of 6.15am. i better try to sleep in lab tomorrow, since awake or asleep i don't know what's going on anyway. but then i'm supposed to try to be a good student, ughhhh. :( i bloody hate chem i tell you, useless subject you won't need it to save your life.

i'm blogging, there's still a million things to be done, but i'm blogging. i wonder why the busier i get, the more i blog - seems like a proportional correlation.

anyway i'm off. i guess i just needed to rant that i bloody hate chem, strong language for strong palpable emotion. i mean my profs are generally nice people. but the subject is just disgusting. i should have just gone to smu, at least i won't have one more thing to whine about - the distance!

okay lah i finish whining already. goot bie!

crazy week ahead

gosh this week's going to be busy like crap i can forsee. now you think it's not true since i managed to squeeze time to blog. but hey hey this is an outlet alright! a quickie shoutout before i zip off to sleep - like i can do that, the more i know i should hurry to sleep it's probably not going to happen so easily.

tennis in the morn, school the whole afternoon tomorrow, before rushing off for my drum lesson at night. wed is school as usual in the afternoon. but dang there's lab on thurs since i can't do it on fri.

right now the weekend plus fri in batam seems so much more enticing than all the work.

here's az signing off. i wonder when's the next time i'll blog... probably soon though, since i'll be stuck staring at Foster looking for info for my wed presentation.
